Starting in January 2025, Microsoft will charge organizations for unlicensed OneDrive account storage. Therefore, admins must manage these unlicensed OneDrive accounts before the organization ends up with unexpected costs or deleted OneDrive files. In this article, you will learn how to get all unlicensed OneDrive user accounts report in the SharePoint admin center.
Unlicensed OneDrive accounts
An unlicensed OneDrive account is when you:
- Remove the licenses from a user
- Delete the user from your organization
When you delete a user, you can choose what to do with the OneDrive files, such as giving another user access to the OneDrive for 30 days. Also, when the user is deleted, their OneDrive files shared with others will remain.
Newly unlicensed OneDrive accounts will be archived after 93 days of the license removal or user deletion. For example, the unlicensed OneDrive account with license removal on August 1, 2025, will be inaccessible to users as of November 2, 2025.
From January 2025, all the unlicensed OneDrive accounts will be charged for storage costs. Otherwise, these unlicensed OneDrive user accounts will be deleted after 180 days.
